Overview

Lower Dolpo Trek, aka Shey-Phoksundo Trek, is a stunning trek through Shey-Phoksundo National Park with the opportunity to immerse in the local culture and heritage of Nepal. Lower Dolpo Trek Difficulty is moderate, and with some physical and cardiovascular training, you can easily face the possible challenges. In contrast, Shey Phoksundo National Park is home to one of Nepal's deepest lakes, ancient Tibetan monasteries, and remote traditional villages.

Shey-Phoksundo National Park is the only Trans-Himalayan national park. This lake is a prominent part of this park, and the lake is Y-shaped with alpine freshwater. The trek commenced after you landed at the Juphal airport. There is a choice if you want to walk or go via jeep, which takes 6 hours and 3 hours, respectively, to reach Suligad as per the lower Dolpo trek map.

Suligad is the entrance point of Shey-Phoksundo National Park, also known as the home of endangered flora and fauna. The trial is pretty decent inside the national park. The Phoksundo River flowed right by our side, and the forest was equally beautiful. The colors were so vibrant in the fall season. This trekking trail ascends and descends through a densely forested path filled with a view of several waterfalls, all types of walnuts, an abundance of wildlife, a terraced field, and many more things on the way. the journey while enjoying those natural delicacies.

On the next day of the Lower Dolpo trekking itinerary, we enter a different type of landscape. Most of the trials before were kind of dry, with very few trees. Now, there’s greenery all around. You can have organic food such as cow milk, and Tite prepares roti (bitter millet bread). The trials are not so tough. There are not many uphills and downhills, almost a flat path following the shores of the river, and wonderful views.

After a couple of hours of going through the climb, we reached the Jharana waterfall viewpoint. The water from the lake formed this waterfall. It was a magnificent waterfall. This waterfall has 3 steps at 170m in height. The waterfall had a great view too; that waterfall flows on the river. According to locals, this waterfall is the second most beautiful waterfall in Nepal. After seeing the waterfall, one forgets all the tiredness of the uphill hike. This biome is also rich in cultural diversity. The people of this district practiced the pre-Buddhist Bon religion and are also known as the land of rare Bon monasteries.

The uphill hike towards the oligotrophic lake is shortened after an hour’s hike. Ringmo village is the entrance point to the lake. This was a traditional village from 30000 to 40000 years ago. When you enjoy the beauty of the lake and the view of Kanjirowa Himal (6612 m), along with a visit to the various monasteries surrounding the lake, you will feel calm and peaceful.

There are more than 20 stupas in the southern belt, where one gompa is on the eastern side of the shores of the lake, where annual prayers and worship are carried out. The best scenario is definitely from the top of the viewpoint of the lake. A small stream has started to flow from the glacier up here on the way to the viewpoint. The way to Phoksundo viewpoint is a steep climb. Shey-Phoksundo Lake has mainly three faces; these can be seen from a viewpoint of 3890 m. Ringmo village and its surroundings all looked fantastic from here.

Shey-Phoksundo Lake is a lake in Nepal at an altitude of 3611.5 m above sea level. The colors of the lake are bluish-grey as it changes from deep green to gleaming silver as the climate changes and at the moment of sunrise and sunset. The winter, spring, and autumn seasons are the best times to trek the lake.

Without a doubt, we suffered at times, but the views, the natural beauty, the culture, the people, and the sweet encounters made us forget all those hard times. The whole journey just leads you to travel to a piece of heaven. It's worth it. To learn more about the Lower Dolpo Trekking packages and the Lower Dolpo Trekking cost, contact us anytime.

From this town, we will also be able to observe the glorious peaks of Annapurna and the Dhaulagiri massif. Once we land at the airport in Jhupal, we will join the rest of the trekking staff and then begin our trek.

We will traverse a terraced field, the Bheri River, and a narrow gorge on the first leg of our trek. Continuing our walk for about 2–3 hours, we eventually reach Dunai, the administrative headquarters of the Dolpo region. After setting up the camp for the overnight stay, we will take an afternoon walk around the small town of Dunai.

Max Altitude: 2850 m Accommodation: Tented CampDuration: 35-45 min flight & 3-4 hrs trekDistance: 110 km

From today on, the real adventure begins. After an early breakfast, we will leave the Dunai and follow the upstream trail along the southern bank of the Bheri River and Barbung River gorge. The hike today is pleasant, as we will be walking along a level path accompanied by the beautiful landscape. Along the way, we will also pass through several deep gorges, hanging bridges, and isolated villages.

After a couple of hours of hiking, we will take an uphill trail that goes through the pine woods to the open terraced field of Tarakot. It is the small village nested above the Thuli Bheri river, which was once the capital of the ancient independent Kingdom of Tichorung. The Magar tribe resides in this lovely village. Most of the people living in this village practice Tibetan Buddhism as their religion. Once we reached Tarakot, we set up camp in the open space for the overnight stay.

Max Altitude: 2543 m Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, DinnerAccommodation: Tented CampDuration: 5-6 hrsDistance: 12 km

Today we will be hiking alongside the Tarap Chu River. This part of the trek brings us closer to Putha Huinchuli and Churen Himal. Continuing our trek after breakfast, we hike along the Tarap Chu River. After some time of walking, we have to cross a suspension bridge over the Tarap Chu River before we arrive at Laisicap, 2775 meters. Beyond here, we chase up the easy steps for a while, which eventually bring us to Kanigaon at 2950 meters.

This village is the winter residence of the people of Dho-Tarap. From the viewpoint of the village, you can see the wonderful view of Sandul Gompa across the valley. Hiking out of the village, we finally push on the steep uphill trail that takes us through farm terraces and rural villages and eventually arrive at the beautiful camping site of Laini Odar. Near our campsite, there is a beautiful waterfall.

Max Altitude: 3160 m Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, DinnerAccommodation: Tented CampDuration: 6-7 hrsDistance: 14 km

The most adventurous part of the trek awaits us today. Leaving the Laini Odar after breakfast, we walk on a steep trail for a while, and then we traverse the trail, which goes through deep gorges and scary cliffs. The path along here is narrow, and sometimes you can jump from one side to another. In some places, the path disappears, so, we have to make an effort to build the way out.

However, the trail becomes relatively open once you pass the gorge. After a continuous ascent and descent, we hike on an easy trail paved with flat stones until we arrive at Chhyugar. Walking a little further from this village, we will reach the camping site of Toltol for an overnight stay.

Max Altitude: 3545 m Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, FruitsAccommodation: Tented CampDuration: 5-6 hrsDistance: 12 km

The morning walk today begins with the gradual uphill climb leading us to Kamattarka. It is a small, beautiful settlement lying at the confluence of the Tarap Chu and Lang Khola. We then hike on the northwest bank of Tarap Khola to Ghyamghar, a small settlement with the monastery. After a couple of hours of morning hiking, we leave the narrow gorge and pass through the tree line of Juniper bushes and wild roses, finally arriving at Langa.

After a short break at this village, we continue our hike with an uphill ascent to a small, arid hill. On the foothills of this small hill lies the fascinating settlement of Dho Tarap, surrounded by an irregular stone wall.

Max Altitude: 3,900 m Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, FruitsAccommodation: Tented CampDuration: 6-7 hrsDistance: 14 km

Today is the day off after a week of exhausting hikes. You can utilize this time to explore the Dho Tarap village and make friends with the locals, who have hardly seen Westerners for ages. We will hike around the village so that we will be ready to get going on a higher-altitude hike the next day. Dho Tarap is a magnificent highland settlement in the inner Dolpo region, which is dotted with monasteries. At that time, we set off to explore Ribo Bumpa Monastery. This monastery is one of the most sacred monasteries in Dolpo.

According to legend, Jigme Nyima Gyaltzen and Lama Tenzing Tragye constructed this monastery almost a thousand years ago in order to drive out the evil spirits that were roaming this area. During our short walk, we will also get a chance to become acquainted with the local culture of the region. People living here wear home-spun clothing that is sometimes dyed a maroon color, and they favor Tibetan-style somba or dhocha (boots with upturned toes) for footwear. Both men and women often wear religious amulets and strings of coral, amber, and turquoise. The people of the region are both Bon Po and Nyingmapa (Buddhist sects).

Max Altitude: 3,900 m Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, FruitsAccommodation: Tented CampDuration: Full day

After the rest and exploration day at Dho Tarap village, we begin today's trek to the Numa La Base Camp. After having breakfast in the camp, we continue our hike, enjoying the view of the lush grassland on both sides of the river. Though the walk today is not long, the increase in altitude decreases the pace of our hiking. We slowly take an uphill trail dotted with rocks and a steep landscape, which reaches Tokyo at 4209 meters.

Tokyou is a small but beautiful settlement with a graceful kani gait and old-fashioned houses. Getting out of the village, we cross the suspension bridge over Kanger Khola and ascend uphill along the wild and barren, rugged trail to the base camp of Numa La at 4350 meters.

Max Altitude: 4440 m Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, FruitsAccommodation: Tented CampDuration: 7-8 hrsDistance: 18 km

The hike today is going to be tough and will test your endurance. The path to cross the Numa La pass is difficult, which will be an electrifying and maddening experience for you. After morning breakfast, we walk on the uphill trail to the top ridge of Numa La. Once you reach the top ridge of the Numa La pass, you can have a mesmerizing view of the surrounding landscape.

The scenery of the valleys and mountains, including the Dhaulagiri massif and other distinct snow-capped peaks, is so spiritually invigorating. You will also be enchanted by the dramatic views of Shering Gompa, which is the house for the monks in the region. After some time enjoying the splendid view from the top ridge of the camp, we slide down, following Gyambo Khola, to camp at Danighar for an overnight stay.

Max Altitude: 5190 m Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, FruitsAccommodation: Tented CampDuration: 6-7 HoursDistance: 12 km

It is another technical day of the Upper Dolpo Trek. The trek today goes across the Baga La Pass at 5170- meters. Right after breakfast, we commence our hike with a vertical uphill climb along the shabby yak trail up to the top of Baga La. Reaching the top of Baga La, we will have magnificent views of the surrounding landscape and snowcapped peaks of the Kanjirowa Mountain ranges.

The view of the peak ridgeline from the top of this pass is considered one of the most beautiful views of the entire Phoskundo Nature Experience. After spending a wonderful moment here, we descend the pass into a deep ravine at first and then cross the frozen stream to open space. The final push down through the beautiful meadow; we finally arrive at our campsite in Temche.

Max Altitude: 5070 m Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, FruitsAccommodation: Tented CampDuration: 7-8 hrsDistance: 18 km

The trek today is much easier as compared to the past two days of trekking. We start our morning hike with a downhill walk to Yak Kharka. Along the trekking trail to the Phoskundo, you will have numerous opportunities to observe the astonishing scenery of the mountain panorama and mother nature’s beauty. Observing the beauty of nature will make you forget all the trouble you have gone through, during the whole hike. We will take a break for a while to capture Mother Nature's beauty through the lenses of a camera and create a memory to cherish for a lifetime.

Throughout your trek today, we will be accompanied by magnificent views of the towering cliff as well. After a continuous hike for about 3 hours of traversing through lush vegetation of pine, junipers, and cypress, we eventually arrive at Ringmo. This small village is a famous Bon settlement in the region. Strolling further downhill for 30 minutes brings us to the mesmerizingly beautiful lake, Phoskundo.

Max Altitude: 3,995 m Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, FruitsAccommodation: Tented CampDuration: 4-5 HoursDistance: 14 km

Today is the day off to explore around Phoskundo Lake and Ringmo village. Once we have our breakfast, we will take a hike to explore the magnificent Lake Phoskundo. This lake is famous for its magnificent turquoise color and spectacular scenery. Walking around this pristine freshwater lake is relaxing and enjoyable.

In the daytime, we will take a short hike to Ringmo village and also head to Tshowa. We will also visit the 900-year-old gompa nestling at the top ridge above Phoskundo Lake. This sacred place is the best place to let your spirit go free. In the evening, we will head back to the camp.

Max Altitude: 3,611 meters Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, FruitsAccommodation: Tented CampDuration: Full day

The hike today is the downhill walk to Shyanta. After having breakfast, we begin our hike towards Shyanta. At first, we slide downward for about 3 hours until we arrive at the village of Chekpa. We then hiked on a rocky trail, passing through barren hills and tiny Bon Po settlements, for an hour. Before we arrive at Shyanta, we begin to see the sign of tropical forest coming into our sight. Once we reached the picturesque place of Shyanta, we set up camp for the overnight stay.

Max Altitude: 2,520 m Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, FruitsAccommodation: Tented CampDuration: 6-7 hrsDistance: 18 km

Today is the final day of our trekking journey. After spending the night in the small town of Shyanta, we will start our morning walk from this town. However, we will trek to Jhupal, observing and exploring nature along the way. After 6 hours of trekking, we will eventually reach Jhupal. We will stay at Jhupal for the night.

We organize private treks too. If you wish to tailor-make the Upper Mustang Trek itinerary, then contact us anytime. You can custom-create the itinerary as per your time availability and requirements.

Essential Info

Dolpo Region is a restricted area, which is a place that needs a special permit from the government and a minimum of 2 people.

Food & Accommodation during Lower Dolpo Trekking

Our Lower Dolpo Trekking package includes a lodge stay or 3-star quality based on twin-sharing arrangements in the Kathmandu Valley until you reach Jhupal. When you start trekking, you have to stay in a tent camp along with the trekking guide and porters as soon as you reach Dunai. We provide chefs to take care of food and other basic needs. Our Chef will provide you with three meals, including breakfast, lunch, and dinner as per your requirements.

Drinking Water

The Dolpo region is a very isolated and restricted area of Nepal. You can buy mineral water in the lower altitude of the trek but as soon as you move upwards, the settlements and tea houses decrease. So, you have to bring your water bottle with water purification tablets from Kathmandu. We help you refill your water bottle from a fresh, flowing natural spring and drink it after adding iodine or water purification tablets. We do not recommend the use of plastic ware as it adds waste in the higher altitudes. There is a hot water facility in the morning and evening at the kitchen of the tent.

Packing Essentials

You must bring the following things for trekking in the Upper Dolpo region:

  • Clothes: The essential clothes include Thermal tops and leggings (3+ sets), Trekking trousers (2 pairs), Underwear (minimum 3 pairs), Trekking socks (4+ pairs), Light gloves, a hat with ear protection, a Waterproof jacket and trousers, Insulating jacket (down or synthetic) and so on.
  • Essentials like water bottles, headlamps with spare batteries, Sunglasses and hard case, Sunscreen and lip balm with SPF, Toiletries and towels, Basic first aid kit, trekking poles, and so on.
  • Sturdy trekking boots with ankle support.
  • A 35-45L day backpack for daily use and a duffel bag of 80L capacity
  • Season sleeping bag and sleeping pad for insulation, warmth, and comfort.

Lower Dolpo Trek Permits

You cannot trek to the Lower Dolpo region without permits. The Lower Dolpo trek requires permits like the Dolpo Restricted Area Permit and Shey Phoksundo National Park Permit. The trekker shouldn't worry about where to get the trekking permits, as Mystic Adventure Holiday company will obtain the necessary permit on your behalf.

 Acclimatization and Altitude concerns

The trip to the Lower Dolpo Region is an 18-day trip. During these 18 days of hiking, you have to hike for 11 days with a full day of acclimatization. The diverse altitude, several high mountain passes and rugged terrain make the trek more difficult. In addition to this, you may face altitude sickness and its related problems in the Upper Dolpo region. The symptoms of altitude sickness are shortness of breath, fatigue, nausea, dizziness, headache, loss of appetite, erratic sleep, and insomnia. To prevent altitude sickness, you have to drink plenty of water, walk at the same pace, sleep enough, and eat nutritious food on the journey.

Responsible Trekking

You must trek responsibly in the restricted areas of the Lower Dolpo region. As a traveler, you have to minimize the use of non-biodegradable waste and hike without disturbing the vegetation and habitat of wildlife. You have to use reusable water bottles and avoid buying mineral water in hotels and tea houses. You can also contribute to the local economy by buying souvenirs from the villages.

Customize Itineraries and Trip Extensions

The Lower Dolpo trek itinerary can be customized and trips can be extended further based on your preferences and fitness level. The customization of the trek itinerary means extra days for acclimatization days, side trips to nearby landmarks, and so on.

The trip extensions include visiting the nearby villages, monasteries, or viewpoints, or even extending your trek to include other destinations. As a mystic adventure representative, we will organize, customize, and extend your trekking journey through the Himalayas.

Tips to make the Lower Dolpo Region Trek Smooth

  • Double-check all the gear and clothing before embarking on the trek Click here.
  • Carry a reusable water bottle and fill it in the lodges or tea shops along the route. It will save you a lot of money and also keep the environment clean.

  • Do know that you may have to pay a few extra bucks to use services like WiFi, hot showers, and charging booths at some places.
  • Carry a Nepali SIM card to use cellular data on the way (the network may not be stable all the time).
  • Carry extra batteries or a solar charger.
  • You can tip any amount you like to the crew members. To give you a general idea, this is what we recommend: USD 100 to the porter & guide, USD 5 to the tour guide, and USD 2 to the driver.
