A Brief Overview of the trek

The Langtang Gosainkunda trek lasts 15 days, starting and ending in Kathmandu. The itinerary starts with sightseeing in Kathmandu and then a scenic drive to syabrubesi. The journey continues to the Gosaikunda, passing through destinations like Lama Hotel, Langtang Village, Kyanjin Gompa, Tserko Ri, and Shin Gompa. 

The trails are less explored compared to the annapurna base camp trek. You can enjoy the journey in your own way. There are various viewpoints like Kyanjin Ri, Tserko Ri, and Gosaikunda Lake Viewpoint from where you can capture stunning pictures (best for content creators and photographers).

This beautiful trek offers the opportunity for cultural immersion. The destinations we will visit during the trek are inhabited by the Tamang and Sherpa communities. There you can learn their unique culture firsthand, taste their cuisine and experience their hospitality. 

During the trek, you will be treated to the spectacular vistas of the peaks like Langtang Lirung, Dorje Lakpa, Kinshung, and Changbu.   • UNESCO world heritage sites

As per the Gosaikunda trek itinerary, the second day is dedicated to the exploration of the heritage sites. There are seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Kathmandu. You can see the artistic fusion, craftsmanship, and historical context in the sites. 

The site’s names are Kathmandu Durbar Square (Hanuman Dhoka), Patan Durbar Square, Bhaktapur Durbar Square, Swayambhunath Stupa, Boudhanath Stupa, Pashupatinath Temple, and Changu Narayan Temple. Collectively, these sites represent the rich artistic and architectural heritage of ancient Nepal. 

  • Syabrubesi

Syabrubesi is a beautiful village nestled in the Himalayan foothills along the banks of the Langtang River in the Langtang region. The altitude level of the Syabrubesi is approximately 1,460 meters (4,790 feet). 

The peaks that are visible from the Langtang Lirung, Yala Peak, Shishapangma, Dorje Lakpa, Ganchenpo, and so on. 

This village is surrounded by the lush green hills. In this serene environment, the Tamang community resides. You can engage with the locals and learn about traditional practices, music, dance, and festivals. 

  • Lama Hotel 

Lama Hotel is an accommodation chain located within the Langtang National park. It is often confused as a single hotel but actually consists of multiple structures. The altitude level at which the Lama hotel is approximately 2,480 meters (8,136 feet). 

The structures are government-owned and are operated by the locals from the Langtang village. The surroundings of the Lama hotel are rich in biodiversity and are home to several species, including red panda and Himalayan black bear, and several species of birds. 

You can see the snowcapped peaks, including Langtang Lirung, Dorje Lakpa, Nayakanga, Langtang Ri, and so on. 

  • Langtang Village

Langtang village is a beautiful village in the Langtang valley of Nepal. The elevation level at which the Langtang village sits is 3,430 meters (11,253 feet). From the village, you can see the peaks like Langtang Lirung, Dorje Lakpa, and so on

The majority of people who live there are of the Tamang ethnic group, along with Gurung and Sherpa communities. Thus, you can engage with them and experience some village's Tibetan-influenced Buddhist cultures and local customs. 

  • Kyanjin Gompa

Kyanjin Gompa is a Buddhist monastery in the Langtang Valley of Nepal. The altitude level at which the monastery sits is approximately 3,870 meters (12,694 feet). It features ancient thangkas. 

In the monastery, various Buddhist rituals and festivals are celebrated throughout the year. Furthermore, from the Kyanjin Gompa, you can see the peaks like Langtang Lirung, Yala Peak, and Dorje Lakpa. 

  • Tserko Ri

Tserko Ri is an important mountain peak in the Langtang National park. The altitude level at which the peak is situated is 5,033 meters (16,512 feet). It is the highest point of the Langtang Gosaikunda trek. 

The summit of the Tserko ri is adorned with the vibrant prayer flags and wooden poles. From the summit, you can capture pictures of the snowcapped peaks like Langtang Lirung, Yala Peak, Dorje Lakpa. Naya Kanga, and many more. 

  • Gosaikunda Lake

Gosaikunda is a sacred lake located in Rasuwa District of Nepal. The elevation at which the lake is situated is 4,380 meters (14,370 feet). The lake features dramatic views of the Ganesh Himal and Langtang ranges. 

The lake holds an important place for Hindus and buddhist. It is believed that Gosaikunda was created when Lord Shiva pierced the ground with his trident to obtain water to soothe his throat after consuming poison during the churning of the ocean (Samudra Manthan). 

  • Shin Gompa

Shin Gompa is an important Buddhist monastery in the Langtang region. The altitude level of the monastery is 3,580 meters (11,745 feet). From the Gompa, you can see the Langtang Lirung, Ganesh Himal and surrounding peaks. 

The monastery adheres to the Tibetan Buddhist tradition. The regular practices of prayer, meditation and study of the scriptures are done. The majority of the people who reside around the monastery are Tamang people and follow their unique traditions and cultures.

At Mystic Adventure Holidays, our intention is always to follow the Langtang Gosaikunda Trek Itinerary. Kathmandu, Nepal's capital city, is in a valley surrounded by picturesque green hills on all sides. Assume you enter through the flight (Airways). The Mystic Adventure Holidays representative will be in the airport terminal with our company flag. Nepali CultureThe traditional greeting is to press one's palms together in front of the chest and utter "Namaste" (which means "I greet the god within you"). Depending on the level of the person you are welcoming, you may greet them with a nod of the head or a bow, as well as khadas (Buddhist shawls) or garlands and a crimson tika (tilak) on your forehead. The drive from Kathmandu to Syabrubesi begins early in the morning. Following a scenic route, you will come out of Kathmandu Valley to the foot of Langtang Valley. On the way, you can see superb views of snow-capped Himalayan mountains like Mt. Manaslu, Mt. Annapurna, and Ganesh Himal.

Syabrubesi is the entrance to Langtang National Park. You will register your permits here before moving towards the Lama Hotel. The trail follows the famous Tamang Heritage Trekking route. Crossing the Bhote Koshi River on a long, thrilling suspension bridge, you will continue ascending. Later, the trail passes by Langtang Khola to the Lama Hotel.

Enjoying the stunning views of Langtang Lirung, you will climb out of the forest at Ghora Tabela. It is a Nepalese Army post. The trail gradually ascends, and the valley widens. Today, it is going to be a short trek to Kyanjin Gompa. Leaving dense forests behind, the trail follows yak pastures and rushing streams. The giant mountains on both sides of the valley offer stunning views. Kyanjin Gompa is an ancient monastery. Later in the day, you will visit a local cheese factory to explore and taste delicious cheese.

It is a rest day in Kyanjin Gompa. You will go on a hike to Tserko Ri, a viewpoint that offers breathtaking views of the Himalayan mountains. The trail is steep and difficult. Also, explore the village and spend time with the locals.

Following the same trail back, you will descend to the Lama Hotel. The trail goes along the Langtang River back to Langtang village. Further, pass by Ghora Tabela and drop down through lush forests to the Lama Hotel.

From the Lama Hotel, you will descend to Pairo, where you can see a river. Crossing the river, the trail ascends towards Thulo Syabru. You will walk through lush forests of pine and juniper. If you are lucky, you may get to see rare birds and animals like the red pandas. The route offers excellent scenery.

After having breakfast, climb to Dimsa village. From here, the trail goes through Durdagang and Foprang Danda (3,200 m). Trekking through lush forests of rhododendron, oak, and hemlock, you will reach Shin Gompa for the night.

The trail today leads to the sacred Gosaikunda Lake (4,380 m). You will ascend to the Laurebina Pass and continue trekking through meadows. Pass by many stone walls and a couple of small lakes on the way. Gosaikunda is one of the holy lakes for Hindus and Buddhists.

As per legend, this lake is believed to have been created after Lord Shiva came here to soothe his burning throat after swallowing the poison that threatened the world. The views of Ganesh Himal, Langtang Himal, Mt. Manaslu, and others are spectacular.

The trail retraces its steps back to Shin Gompa. You will walk through verdant forests, enjoying scenic landscapes.

It is a leisurely day in Kathmandu. You can spend the day as you wish. We recommend going window shopping and exploring the local market. Difficulty level of the trek

The difficulty level of the Langtang Gosaikunda Lake trek is graded as moderate to challenging. It is because the trek to the Gosaikunda is added to the normal langtang valley trek

There are other reasons too. For example, you have to walk through the Gosaikunda trekking route that has rocky terrain and demands steep ascents and descents. 

The highest elevation reached during the trek is 5,033 meters (16,512 feet). Trekking to this height can cause altitude sickness, adding challenges to the trek. 

Furthermore, the average walking hours per day are 5-7 hours daily for about 10 days covering 87 kilometers. For the normal person, facing this challenge with a smiley face is very difficult without proper preparation and training. 

Best time to go for the trek

The best time to go for the Langtang Valley and Gosaikunda trekking is from late February to early June and from early September to late November. During these months, the weather conditions become stable, temperatures become mild, and skies are clear, making the trek comfortable and enjoyable. 

It is the festival time from early September to late november. For the festive experiences, it is the best time. While for the serene experiences with the views of the blooming flowers, late February to early June is the best one. 

Also, the Langtang Gosaikunda trek cost is higher at this time, as most of the trekkers choose this time for the trekking to the Langtang and Gosaikunda. . 

Permits required for the trek

The permit required for the Langtang Valley and Gosaikunda trek is the TIMS Card (Trekkers' Information Management System) and the Langtang National Park Entry Permit. You can get these permits via a registered trekking agency or by visiting the related offices in Kathmandu or Pokhara. 

The documents needed for this permit are the original passport with copies, passport-sized photographs, visa, travel insurance details, and so on. 

Travel insurance required for the trek

Travel insurance is highly recommended for the Langtang and Gosaikunda treks, as they involve high-altitude trekking and potential risks like altitude sickness, injuries, and other emergencies. 

The travel insurance is required for the coverage of the medical emergencies and evacuation expenses, helicopter evacuation costs, and so on. Furthermore, the travel insurance will also help in recovering from the financial burden because of loss of belongings, trip cancellations, delays and other issues. 

Note: The expenses of the travel insurance are not included in the Gosaikunda trek cost inclusions. 

Accommodation and Food options during the trek

The accommodation option during the Gosaikunda Langtang trek is mostly teahouses. The facilities are basic, including beds, pillows, and blankets. In the lower regions, you may find the attached bathrooms but in the higher regions, there are mostly common bathrooms for all the rooms. 

In case of food options availability, you can have a variety of food options during trekking in Nepal. The common food options are dal-bhat, noodles, momos (Nepali dumplings), Tibetan bread, dhido (a type of cornmeal porridge), and chowmin. 

  • Electricity, Telephone, and Internet

During the Gosainkunda Langtang trek, electricity is available in most of the teahouses. However, the sources may be either hydro-powered or solar powered. To charge the devices, a small amount of money is needed. 

You will need a local SIM card from Ncell or NTC for connectivity. The network is mostly stable in the lower regions, while it may be unavailable at some places like Tserko ri. So, for the communication, you can use the alternative methods. 

The Wi-Fi is available at most of the teahouses. Teahouse charges an additional fee for the service. The speed of the wifi may be unreliable during the peak seasons. Especially beyond the Kyanjin Gompa, the Wi-Fi reliability is less. 

Note: The personal expenses like device charging fees, telephone bills, and wifi service charges are not included in the Langtang Gosaikunda trekking cost inclusions. 

  • Drinking Water

During the Langtang Gosaikunda Trekking, you can buy bottled water at teahouses and small shops. However, the availability of the bottled water becomes less when you trek to the higher elevation and the price becomes higher if found. 

Boiled or filtered water is available in teahouses. The teahouses charge a small fee for the water. The tap water is available but needs to be purified before being able to drink it. 

The Langtang Gosaikunda trek itinerary is 15 days so you can carry the reusable bottle to save money. Also, you can carry the portable purification system for the Gosaikunda trekking. 

Note: The expenses related to the hot water, or bottled water, are not included in the Langtang Gosaikunda trekking price. 

  • Toilet and shower facility

In the lower regions of the Langtang Valley, you can find the western-style toilets in most of the teahouses and lodges. However, as you ascend to the higher regions, you will find the squat-style toilets. 

In terms of the shower facility, most of the teahouses offer hot showers with an additional costs. The shower options include solar rain showers or basic gas geyser showers. In some teahouses, you may only find the bucket-style shower for bathing. 

Altitude sickness issues and acclimatization

During high-altitude treks like the Gosaikunda trek, altitude sickness issues can be a serious concern. So, you need to be educated about altitude sickness and acclimatization before your trekking journey to gosaikunda. 

Some of the common symptoms of altitude sickness include headaches, nausea, dizziness, shortness of breath, and fatigue. 

The acclimation strategy for the Langtang Gosaikunda trekking includes gradual ascent, including rest days in the itinerary, proper hydration, eating a balanced diet, and so on. 

Overall weather and temperatures

The overall weather and temperature depend upon the seasons and altitude levels. The Langtang Gosainkunda trek itinerary includes trekking through diverse altitude levels. 

The lower regions are generally warmer than the higher regions despite seasonal variations. And the nights are always colder than the day, regardless of region or season. 

Below is the seasonal breakdown of the overall weather and temperatures during the Gosainkunda Langtang trekking. 

  • The spring season is known for the stable weather, clear skies, wildflower blooms, and best time for the treks. During the spring season, the daytime temperature ranges from 10°C to 20°C, while the nighttime temperature ranges from 5°C to 10°C. 
  • Summer season is a warm season. The average daytime temperature ranges from 27°C to 30°C in the lower regions, while the nighttime temperature can drop below 21°C. There is frequent rainfall during the summer season. 
  • During the autumn season, the weather becomes stable just like the spring season. The skies are clear and the views can be seen clearly. The daytime temperatures can go up to 28°C. However, the nighttime temperature can drop below 10°C. 
  • The winter is the time for freezing cold. During the winter, there is frequent snowfall with potential blizzards at the higher altitudes. The daytime temperatures vary from between -6° C and 10° C, while the temperature during the nighttime can drop below -15° C or colder.

  • International and internal flights

If you are traveling from abroad, then you will need a visa and passport to enter Nepal. Visa on arrival is only for some countries. So, check your eligibility for the visa on arrival before booking the flight. 

You can carry 23 kg, including your hold baggage and hand luggage, on your international flight. For the extra weight of the duffel bag or day pack, you have to pay an extra amount of money.

You must have a duffel bag of 80L capacity and a 50-65L backpack; that is enough for carrying essential equipment like gear and other items. Typically, the porter will carry the duffel bag while you are responsible for carrying your backpack. You may need a small, 20–30-liter day backpack to carry your essentials during the day’s hike
