Essential Info

Best Time for the Tour

The best time for the tour highly depends on personal preferences. However, the best time for the tour for the majority of travelers is in the spring and autumn seasons. During these seasons, rainfall is rare, skies are clear, and temperatures are mild.

The other seasons, like winter, come with harsh weather conditions, and in summer, there is the fear of frequent rainfall. But, during summer season, the locals celebrate the Yartung Festival joyfully.

Permits and Passes

Permits and passes are the most important things that are needed before going on the Upper Mustang Jeep Tour. These passes and permits are for the trekker’s safety. Some of the passes that you will need are the Restricted Area Permit (for foreign visitors only), the Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) Permit, and the TIMS (Trekkers Information Management System) Permit.

You can obtain permits like ACAP and TIMS at the Nepal Tourism Board office, and for restricted area permits, you have to go to the Department of Immigration in Kathmandu with a registered trekking agency representative.

In addition, if you are planning to film or document the trip, then you will need the special permit. You can obtain the special permit from the Nepal Ministry of Information and Communication.

Tour Costs

The Upper Mustang Jeep Touring cost per person ranges from 2000 US dollars to 2500 US dollars. The cost depends on the size of your group. You will get discounts, or the cost per person will be less if you choose to travel in a group.

There are a variety of dishes served in the teahouses, including both local Mustangi dishes and international fare.

Trip Grade

The trip grade for the jeep tour is moderate. It is best for those who are old or underage because the tour doesn’t require physical demands or previous trekking experience. In addition, it will allow them to explore the remote Mustang region and enjoy the trip.

Internet facility and reliability

There will be no problem with internet facilities while you are in Pokhara or Kathmandu. But once you start your journey in the Upper Mustang region, there is no guarantee of a fast and reliable internet facility. The internet facility is limited and slow once you get there.

Also, the mobile coverage is inconsistent. I suggest you download all the required and essential information before the tour. Coordinate with your group and operators during the tour. Bring a satellite phone if possible to have reliable communication.

FAQs

The Upper Mustang Trek is a difficult to moderate-level trek. It is neither easy nor strenuous. It all depends on your trekking experience, fitness, and endurance level.

The biggest reason for the Upper Mustang being a restricted area is the open border between Nepal and Tibet. This restricted area permit and strict rules are to control illegal activities and maintain border security. Likewise, the region also has many undiscovered caves, huge deposits of minerals, and ancient cultural heritage.

To reach Mustang from Kathmandu, you have to fly or drive to Pokhara. From there, you can fly/drive to Jomsom and trek to Lo Manthang, which takes 4 to 5 days.

On average, the Upper Mustang trek costs around USD 1500 to USD 2100 for 12 days. The price may change if your itinerary is longer. Check our cost include and exclude section for more information, or talk to our representative here for detailed information regarding the Upper Mustang trek cost.
