Broad Peak (8,051 meters) is the 12th-highest mountain in the world, situated in the Gilgit-Baltistan region of Pakistan. It is just 8 km away from Mount K2 (the second largest mountain in the world). Just like Mount K2, the broad peak also falls in the Karakoram range along the border of Pakistan and China. 

Locally, people of Pakistan call it the Falchan Kangri. It is just like Nepali people call Mount Everest Sagarmatha. And they share the same naming history as well. The foreign (British) explorer Martin Conway in 1892 named the peak Broad Peak for having a wide and long summit ridge (nearly 2 kilometers).

Till now, in 2026, Broad Peak remains one of the world’s most challenging 8000-meter peaks. And there are reasons like extreme altitude, unpredictable weather, sudden slab avalanches, and risky summit ridges. 

Recently, the avalanche on the broad peak struck an international expedition. This climbing accident took the lives of all 10 climbers, including the renowned mountaineer Nirmal Purja (Nims Dai). The climbers and guides were from nations like Nepal, the United States, Oman, Pakistan, and China.

What is the history of Broad Peak?

Just like its name, the broad peak history is also broad. At first, we will start from its naming and early exploration. In 1856, a team did the survey, which is popular as the Great Trigonometrical Survey. The team was led by British surveyor Thomas George Montgomery and designated Mount K3.

Again, in 1892, a British expedition led by Martin Conway explored the Baltoro Glacier. In that survey, they found the wide, 1.5-kilometer summit ridge. So, to honor this feature, they simply named it Broad Peak. 

Later, in 1954, an attempt was made to reach the broad peak summit by the Karl Herrligkoffer team (German-Swiss). They were unsuccessful because of the extreme weather and high winds. 

The Austrian team consisting of Fritz Wintersteller, Marcus Schmuck, Kurt Diemberger, and Hermann Buhl did the first Broad Peak expedition in July 1957. It was a successful ascent. At that time, they climbed without using supplemental oxygen or traditional high-altitude porter support above base camp.

Later in 1984, Polish climber Krystyna Palmowska made the first solo female ascent of the 8000-meter peak. She achieved this by broad peak climbing.
The Polish climbers did the first winter ascents of the neighboring peaks of the broad peak. It was winter time. And the more important thing was in March 2013, Maciej Berbeka and Tomasz Kowalski did the first winter ascent of Broad Peak. But, tragically, they passed during descent.

In 2019, late Nepali mountaineer Nirmal Purja climbed Broad Peak as part of his historic "Project Possible 14/7." Broad Peak was one of the 14 eight-thousander peaks, which he summited in a record-breaking six months and six days that year.

The most recent broad peak in history was the expedition by the late Nirmal Purja. It was a climbing accident that claimed the lives of 10 people, including Nirmal Purja. There was a sudden avalanche break during the climbing.

Why is Broad Peak Considered One of the Most Difficult 8,000-Meter Mountains?

Besides its broad name, the peak summit poses broad risks, including extreme altitude, deceptive false summits, narrow corniced final ridges, and severe avalanche risks in Pakistan's Karakoram range. Some of the key challenges of the broad peak are the following: 

  • The death zone

The broad peak height is above 8000 meters(classified as a death zone). At that level, the air contains extremely low oxygen levels. These levels strain the human body in an inhumane manner. While it is common in the other eight thousanders, it cannot be ignored either. 

  • Deceptive false summit

There are false summits that give the false impression of success. The climber seems like they have reached the top of the broad peak, but they have not. This makes the exhausted climbers climb a longer, narrower, and more unstable corniced ridge to reach the true peak.

  • Unpredictable weather and avalanches

The unpredictable weather in the Karakoram Mountains, including broad peaks along with the Broad Peak avalanche, is the other challenge. The Karakoram Range experiences rapid and volatile weather shifts. This sudden change in atmosphere can trigger devastating avalanches.

  • Gruelling Endurance Requirements

The broad peak demands zero error or exhaustion at extreme altitude. It means the climber has to complete the whole climb without error all within a timeframe of 10 to 14 hours of climbing up and another 4 to 6 hours down.

Normal Climbing Route and Major Climbing Risks

The normal climbing route for Broad Peak climbing is the west spur via the Broad Peak col. This route starts from the base camp on the Goodwin-Austen Glacier (4900 meters). Below are the key route-specific details. 

  • Base Camp (4,900m)

From the base camp, the official climbing starts. Once climbers reach the base camp, they will prepare for the further climb. However, reaching the base camp itself is a trip called a 12-day Broad Peak base camp trekking adventure with actual trekking starting from Askole, Pakistan.

From now on, you have to be more aware of altitude sickness issues. The oxygen level is depleting to dangerous levels. You have to be more prepared than you are planning to be. Team coordination and constant monitoring of altitude sickness symptoms and treatment immediately if seen are the key things. 

Stay hydrated, have vegetarian meals, eat protein- and carb-dense meals, avoid alcohol and smoking, and so on. Before going for the expedition, the climbers have been briefed by the guide, which they should consider very seriously. 

  • Camp I (approx. 5,700m–6,000m)

Just above the base camp, there is camp I. It takes around 1 hour to cross the Godwin-Austen Glacier. Then, climbers cross the series of moderate-to-steep snowy ramps toward the West Ridge route. Further, they ascend through the technical snow gully and then arrive in Camp I. The whole trip will be completed in 6-7 hours. 

While moving from base camp to camp, I and the climbers face several broad peak climbing risks like glacier navigation, rockfall risk, and physical toll. The surface is mostly an active, heavily broken glacier with steep, loose scree and rock spurs. So, constant crevasse awareness is a must. Also, energy drain is real in steep rock scramble climbing. 

  • Camp II (approx. 6,200m–6,400m)

The next is camp. II. The climbers leave the camp and cross initial snow slopes and then negotiate the steep inclines up snow and snow gullies. 
The climbers face the crux of the lower mountain, including steep, mixed rock and ice climbing all while depending upon the fixed rope lines. They will be exposed to the high wind whip. This whip can increase the risk of frostbite and balance loss. 

Good things are at the key technical sections; the climbers will be assisted by professional guides. Camp II is an exposed place, and this whole climbing trip concludes in 3-5 hours.

  • Camp III (approx. 7,000m–7,100m)

After camp II, the climbers aim for camp III. The section from camp II to camp III includes broad, open snow slopes. There are rock ribs, loose rock gullies, and 40° to 50° snow and ice slopes. The climbers face rockfall, ice fall, and crevasse slip risks. High winds and sudden mountain storms are more frequent.

These sections are highly prone to dangerous slab avalanches too. There is heavy accumulation of snow that makes the climbers exhausted. Also, there is loss of sunlight early in the day so, they must be ready to face the extreme cold. The climbing section is completed in 5-7 hours. 

The good thing is the expedition guides put the fixed ropes in the steeper rock bands and ice gullies.

  • Col. (7,100 m – 7,800 m)

This is another important route. The route from Camp III to the col is an extreme high-altitude zone. Every step of the climber is accompanied with immense physical effort. They have to face the crevasses; hazard means climbing through dangerous, large, hidden schrunds and crevasses.

In between, the most dangerous part is the featureless snow plateau. It is difficult to navigate and reach the coal section. Safe navigation through these is the key. 

  • Summit push (7,800 m – 8,051 m)

The summit push section to the top of the broad peak is the most dangerous and demanding phase of the broad peak climbing expedition. While climbing the summit push route section, climbers face extreme cold down to -25°C or lower and wind chills reaching -50°C. They navigate the 8-10 hour final ascent to the top. 

Before reaching the true summit point, the climbers have to go through the summit ridge with multiple false peaks and secondary points. This is the main point where climbers get exhausted as they get so many false hopes of completion. These false peaks make the trip even more dangerous. 

And even more dangerous is the strict turnaround from around 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM. It does not matter if you have completed the summit or not; if this time passes, you must descend. The final stretch is a narrow, exposed ridge with deadly drop-offs on both sides.

The climbers often said they noticed severe exhaustion, slow reaction times, and poor decisions while descending from the top.

Recent Broad Peak Avalanche and Climbing Accident

On Thursday, July 30, 2026, at approximately 09:00-09:30 local time, a massive slab avalanche was triggered directly above the Nirmal Purja’s expedition team at an altitude of roughly 6,600 meters. The exact location where the avalanche struck was between Camp II and Camp III (~6,600 m) on Broad Peak, Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Nepal and expedition company Elite Exped officially confirmed the death of the renowned mountaineer Nirmal "Nimsdai" Purja and nine other members of an international expedition. The reason behind the death was a massive avalanche on Broad Peak in Pakistan.

Currently, bodies below 6600 meters are recovered. And efforts are being made to recover the body at the upper level of altitude. The ongoing search and coordination effort on the ground are assisted by the alpine club of Pakistan and the teams led by prominent figures like Mingma Gyalje Sherpa.

As of now, all the commercial climbing activities of this season on Karakoram's 8,000-meter peaks are halted. Commercial and independent summit pushes were immediately paused or canceled. All the resources are being used in the rescue efforts. 

Early Search and Rescue Efforts

According to the sources, on Friday, July 31, the Pakistani army and local outfitters deployed the drones over the peak in terms of search and rescue efforts. The drone helped them spot the several bodies hanging from fixed ropes and untidily scattered across the avalanche debris. 

The drone team was not enough. So, they formed a ground team with elite high-altitude climbers Mingma Gyalje Sherpa (Mingma G) and Sirbaz Khan. The ground team battled severe weather, deep slab avalanche debris, and extreme altitude risks. At that time, the active secondary avalanche threats were also there. The team faced all of those to reach the impact zone. 

The initial bodies that were recovered and flown out were of Nadhira Al Harthy (Oman), Mallory Geis (USA), and Pur Bahadur Gurung "Yukta" (Nepal). By August 2, the ground team recovered the body of Nirmal Purja at approximately 5,700 meters.

Lucky Guy in Broad Peak

While all struck and died in the accident, one lucky Pakistani guide named Fida Ali avoided the catastrophe. He chose to escort an exhausted Russian climber down to Base Camp. He was with Nirmal Purja while summiting the Gasherbrum II (G2) and left the group to escort the Russian woman.

Life-Threatening Ambition of Mountaineer Nirmal Purja

Due to the heavy, erratic snowfall and dangerous avalanche conditions, all other commercial teams had packed their camps and abandoned the mountain entirely. But Nirmal Purja chose to stay for a late-season summit push.

According to the final social media log of Nirmal Purja, he was not actually planning to climb the broad peak. Instead, he was just planning to scale Gasherbrum II. At last, he discovered the opportunity that would make him the first person in history to climb all 14 eight-thousanders twice without supplemental oxygen. He was just one mountain away, so he attempted to reach the peak. 

Other Deadliest Accidents in Broad Peak History (Timeline)

  • In 1975, a Polish expedition made the first ascent of Broad Peak Central (8,011 m). During the descent, Bohdan Nowaczyk, Marek KÄ™sicki, and Andrzej Sikorski died in a severe storm.
  • During a Polish winter expedition in 1988, CzesÅ‚aw Jakiel was caught in a massive avalanche while climbing toward Camp I and was killed.
  • In 1998, French alpinist Éric Escoffier and his climbing partner Pascale Bessières-Terray disappeared high on the mountain after encountering severe weather during their descent. Their bodies were never found.
  • During Jean-Christophe Lafaille's attempt to establish a new route on Broad Peak in late 2005, Pakistani climber Subhan Jan died in a fall.
  • In 2006, Austrian climber Markus Kronthaler died of exhaustion and dehydration near the summit. His body was later recovered from the death zone a year later.
  • In 2013, Polish climbers Maciej Berbeka, Adam Bielecki, Tomasz Kowalski, and Artur MaÅ‚ek completed the first-ever winter ascent of Broad Peak. During the descent, Maciej Berbeka and Tomasz Kowalski disappeared and were later presumed dead.
  • Later that year, Iranian climbers Aidin Bozorgi, Pouya Keivan, and Mojtaba Jarahi successfully opened a new route on the mountain's southwest face. However, all three disappeared during their descent and were never found.
  • In 2015, local Pakistani high-altitude porter Qamber Ali was killed by a large rockfall below Camp 1.
  • South Korean climber Kim Hong-bin fell during his descent on the Pakistani side of Broad Peak and was lost despite rescue efforts.
  • In 2021, the same season but in a separate summit ridge fall, high-altitude porter Sharif Sadpara lost his life.

Climbers's Preparation for a Broad Peak Expedition Nowadays

After the several deaths of the mountaineers on Broad Peak due to the environmental extremes and structural hazards, the climbers had learnt the lessons. They had learnt to maintain the discipline to turn back no matter the commercial pressure and eliminate the communication delays. 

And the changes are also seen in Pakistani mountaineering. The improvements in Broad Peak expedition safety, like using drone technology, modernised oxygen, advanced forecasting, and cross-team alliances, are being carried out. 

And after all these, here is how a climber prepares their climbing trip in the Karakoram mountains.

  • Physical and technical conditioning

Before the actual expedition begins, the climber engages in the intensive cardiovascular and strength conditioning for the endurance training. If they have no experience, they first try climbing lower Himalayan or Karakoram peaks in the 6,000m to 7,000m range.

On the technical side, they learn ice axe and crampon use, fixed-rope traversal, crevasse rescue, and high-altitude navigation.

  • Logistics and gear

Logistics and gear also play a role in preparation and successful completion of the expedition. The climbers pack the assembling extreme cold-weather clothing, 105 L expedition backpacks, and technical climbing hardware (harnesses, ascenders, and helmets). 

They test and coordinate the modern regulator and mask systems. Normally, 4 to 5 oxygen bottles for the climber and 2 to 3 for high-altitude guides are enough. Also, government climbing royalties, liaison officers, and experienced locals are needed for the expedition. 

  • Acclimatization strategy

For the acclimatization strategy, they follow the strict "climb high, sleep low" protocol. They establish and rotate through Camps 1 (6,000m), 2 (6,500m), and 3 (7,100m) before returning to Base Camp (4,900m) to recover.

Monitoring weather is also part of their plan. They wait at the base camp for the optimal weather window. The climbers utilise updated, safer variations or fixed lines on the upper headwall/rocky summit route.
