History of Ghale Gaun and the Gurung Community
The Ghale gaun is of royal origin. The Ghale were derived from the Ghale kings, former rulers of the region before the unification of Nepal. As proof of the name, the statue of the last Gurung king still stands in the village today.
The village transformed as a model was once a remote village where one had to walk six hours to get there. But now, the village has transformed into a world-renowned destination for community-based homestay tourism. In 2017, the Ghale Gaun was inaugurated as a model SAARC tourism village too.
The village is also an ancestral home of the Tamu people (Gurungs), particularly of the Ghale caste. It is one of the four important high castes of the Gurung community. The Gurungs are globally famous for their service as Gorkha soldiers in the British and Indian armies.
Many people group the Ghale and Gurung in one place, but the Ghale people have a distinct language from the standard Gurung tongue. Also, they celebrate the Lhosar on different dates: Tamu Lhosar on Poush 15 (by Gurungs) and Magh 1 (by Ghales).
Ghale Gaun Homestay Experience: What to expect

The stays are simple, clean, private, or dormitory-style rooms. There are twin beds and warm blankets.
The bathrooms are shared, and the hot water is provided in the buckets. 4G or wifi is available in many homestays, while the charging points may be limited.
The meals prepared and served here are fresh and made of organic ingredients. You can expect the dal bhat, millet bread, and local chicken curry.
In the evening, you may be invited to the Evening Cultural Shows featuring dances like Ghatu, Sorahi, and Jhyaure. That is the beauty of the village homestay in Nepal.
